Some final thoughts on the Morro Bay trip

(Note: All of the images from this trip are available for viewing over on my SmugMug site) A short trip, basically 2 and a half days of shooting. Some nice food, a comfortable room, an area I knew fairly well so I didn’t have to spend a lot of time scouting, and a chance to turn off social media, email and everything else and just focus on the camera and start thinking about being a landscape photographer again. Overall? I’m pretty happy. I came home with 1300 images (including all those stitched panoramas and HDR sets). I ended up...

Morro Bay Day 3: Another Sunrise, another walk, and then…

(Note: All of the images from this trip are available for viewing over on my SmugMug site) Second night in the field, I got to sleep earlier and slept better, plus I knew I could set the alarm a bit later and still get out to my shoot without rushing, so I was in a much better mood than for the first dawn shoot. I had three locations scouted out depending on conditions; it was obvious early on that I wasn’t going to see any glow on the rock, so it made no sense to try to shoot it...

Morro Bay Day 2 (continued): Otters (you knew there’d be otters)

(Note: All of the images from this trip are available for viewing over on my SmugMug site) The glamorous life of a nature photographer on the road: the alarm goes off at way too early in the morning so you can shoot a pre-scouted location when the sun rises, breakfast at McDonalds, you spend time during the day shooting things where the mid-day light isn’t so bothersome if you can, but really you end up back in the hotel room eating lunch out of the mini-fridge (that you stocked when you arrived in town) and editing images and resting...

Morro Bay Day 2 (continued): I go walkies

(Note: All of the images from this trip are available for viewing over on my SmugMug site) I have to admit that the lack of sleep left me feeling a big groggy and not even a hefty dose of caffeine really fixed it, so my first full day in Morro Bay was one of grinding it out despite mostly wanting to sit and maybe take a nap. Unfortunately, I’m not really a napper, so that’s not really an option. What I had planned on doing was to head over to the Marina, where a few years ago they installed...

Morro Bay Day 2: Dawn Patrol

(Note: All of the images from this trip are available for viewing over on my SmugMug site) As usual, the first night on the road it took a long time to get to sleep and I didn’t sleep particularly well. Also as usual, my brain gets into the “OH MY GOD CAN’T SLEEP THROUGH THE ALARM” mode, and so when the alarm really did go off at 5:20 I was already awake and convincing myself the entire region was going to be covered in fog, so it was okay to go back to sleep. Which, if you know Morro...
