Just a few Geese and Cranes

I spent yesterday on a long and productive day trip out to the central valley, spending the morning at San Luis NWR and the afternoon and evening in Merced National Wildlife Refuge. We’re at the end of the season and the birds are already starting to head north for the summer, but Merced is currently mowing the corn fields that are grown there to support the flocks, and that is concentrating the birds on the refuge. Once the mowing is done the geese will head north and be gone until fall.

Just starting to sort through the photos from yesterday, but here’s one panorama I took. Just a few geese and cranes (and this is just one of three large groupings of geese that were on the refuge yesterday. And then there were the large flocks of Sandhill Cranes…
